Why We Gather. The Power of Showing Up

Are we too busy to help others? Have we isolated ourselves?

Building a strong sense of community and prioritizing time for others is essential in today's fast-paced and often isolated world. While it may seem like taking time out of your busy schedule to connect with others is a luxury, research shows that it is actually vital for our mental and emotional well-being. By fostering strong relationships and actively participating in your community, you not only improve your own quality of life but also contribute to the overall health and happiness of those around you.

In my Under the Roof Series, the protagonist, Aggie Drakos, left inspirational notes on the porch of her neighbor, the Absent Nun. A simple gesture that not only encouraged the Absent Nun, but also eventually opened the door to a long-lasting friendship between the two.

Eventually, Aggie and the Absent Nun, now revealed as Abigail, bonded together to take a casserole and banana bread to Lilly, another neighbor who was going through a difficult time.

Allocating time to support and connect with others not only fosters a sense of fulfillment but also has a profound impact on your overall well-being. Acts of kindness and generosity towards others can help reduce stress levels, boost mood, and enhance mental health.

In a world that often celebrates noise, showing up quietly is an act of radical care. Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your neighbor.

Whether it's texting a friend, "thinking of you," showing up with a plate of cookies, handing out candy to the staff at a restaurant, or simply listening, these moments stitch together the fabric of community. They remind us that we're not alone in this world.

So, stop for a moment and ask yourself, how can I improve the well-being of those around me? How can I be part of a community of family members, friends, and neighbors that supports one another? How can I show up?

We gather because we need each other…for the quiet knowing that someone, somewhere, is listening.

So here's to the power of showing up. To those who reach out a helping hand. To others who listen and understand. To the phone call to say, "I'm here for you." To brighten your day with an unexpected visit. To the community we build—one small act at a time.
